Oro Restaurant at Belmond Hotel Cipriani in Venice, Italy—perched along the serene, historic waters of Giudecca Island overlooking the Venetian lagoon—stands as an unrivaled masterpiece of modern Italian high gastronomy. Anchored within one of the world's most glamorous hospitality icons, the Michelin-starred address serves as an ethereal, gold-hued sanctuary where aristocratic heritage, high-society style, and contemporary art intersect. It is a living, breathing salon designed for discerning global travelers—a space where Venice's historic trading-route legacy transforms into an unhurried, multisensory journey beneath a canopy of glowing gold and shimmering lagoon light.

The spirit of Oro is rooted in a profound cultural dialogue that bridges centuries of Venetian opulence with hyper-modern creative vision. Under the visionary guidance of Culinary Creative Director Massimo Bottura and Head Chef Vania Ghedini, the restaurant reimagines the traditional dining room as an intimate, living gallery. The interior architecture—reimagined by celebrated architect Peter Marino—strikes an effortless balance between mid-century La Dolce Vita elegance and the avant-garde spirit of the Venice Art Biennales. Every detail, from hand-cast Murano glass elements to geometric marble underfoot, is crafted to evoke the timeless allure of the floating city.

Far more than a local seafood establishment, Oro operates as a poetic crossroads of international trade and regional terroir. Here, hyper-seasonal catches from the surrounding lagoon are elevated through fragrant sub-tropical aromas and subtle, global culinary influences inspired by distant shores. It is an address where modern culinary innovation honors the sacred rhythm of the tides—where every dish tells a story of discovery, trade, and passion.

Arriving at Oro feels less like visiting a restaurant and more like stepping into a private, sovereign estate suspended above the water. Gliding across the lagoon as the Venetian skyline transitions from amber sunset to twilight, guests enter a world of unhurried grace, quiet romance, and culinary mastery. Oro continues to reign as an irreplaceable crown jewel—a place where nature, art, and fine dining exist in absolute, eternal harmony.

The dining ritual at Oro begins long before one ever touches a fork—it unfolds as a serene water voyage across the expanse of the Venetian lagoon. Gliding away from the bustling stone promenades of St. Mark’s toward the quiet seclusion of Giudecca Island, guests are treated to sweeping, unobstructed panoramas of historic bell towers and palaces framed by the soft glow of dusk. To step off the private launch and onto the grounds of the Belmond Hotel Cipriani is to leave the modern world behind, entering an aristocratic sanctuary suspended in time.

Crossing into the main dining salon reveals a breathless triumph of light, proportion, and Venetian craft. The curved, round architecture of the space was deliberately engineered to offer an unbroken, living canvas of the water, where floor-to-ceiling glass windows capture the gentle movement of passing gondolas and distant tides. Overhead, a soaring gold-leaf domed ceiling anchors the room, illuminating hand-crafted Murano glass chandeliers that scatter soft, liquid light across geometric marble floors and bespoke textiles.

There is an aristocratic depth to this golden splendor, anchored in a storied lineage. First conceptualized in 2014 under the master hand of designer Adam Tihany, the salon was christened Oro—the Italian word for gold—as a direct homage to the shimmering Byzantine mosaics and gilded masterworks of the Venetian Renaissance. That founding vision quickly established the address as an immediate gastronomic beacon, earning its first Michelin star within two years and setting the stage for Peter Marino’s dramatic 2026 metamorphosis—a high-fashion sanctuary where mid-century La Dolce Vita meets contemporary Venetian art.

To sit within the salon of Oro is to experience a living gallery where contemporary art meets centuries of Venetian artisanal heritage. The ambient walls—adorned with hand-cast Murano glass, antiqued mirrored panels, and gilded verre églomisé surfaces—reflect the undulating water outside, creating an atmosphere that feels simultaneously historic and strikingly modern. Custom porcelain pieces, created specifically for the room with subtle gold accents, pay delicate tribute to the restaurant's namesake.

"We wanted the room to feel like a continuous conversation with Venice herself—where the glass, the gold, and the light on the lagoon are all part of the same artistic piece," notes the design team. Here, every table is positioned to feel like a private front-row box at the opera, enveloped in soft velvet, quiet intimacy, and pure aesthetic harmony.

The culinary program led by Head Chef Vania Ghedini, under the direction of Massimo Bottura, represents a revolutionary departure from classic Venetian dining. Rather than strictly adhering to traditional regional recipes, the kitchen bridges three distinct culinary worlds: hyper-local lagoon seafood, rich produce from Emilia-Romagna, and fragrant, grounding Moroccan spices inspired by Chef Ghedini’s years living and cooking in Marrakesh. The result is a bold, soul-stirring gastronomy that mirrors Venice’s ancient history as a global trading port.

This philosophy comes alive through deeply personal dish dedications. The signature tribute, Laguna, serves as a poetic homage to the surrounding waters—a delicate chawanmushi custard infused with local blue crab, concentrated clam water, sea asparagus, and caviar. Her Sturgeon with Ferrarese Caviar sauce pays homage to her own roots in Ferrara, while the Michelin-starred interpretation of raw beef Carpaccio honors hotel founder Giuseppe Cipriani, who invented the iconic original at Harry’s Bar. Most tender of all is the fragrant Riso Latte, born when Bottura called Ghedini to take the helm at Oro while she was in her ninth month of pregnancy in Marrakesh, infusing delicate Moroccan spices with the comforting warmth of motherhood.

"Food should never be static; it must carry memories, trade routes, and emotion," reflects Chef Vania Ghedini. "Our dishes honor the lagoon, but they speak the global language of flavor, heritage, and pure freedom."

Before entering the main dining room, guests traverse La Via Della Sete (The Way of Thirst)—an exquisite, dedicated wine enclave designed to celebrate the art of Italian viticulture. Anchored by a striking marble and mosaic tasting counter, the space features a temperature-controlled glass cellar housing over one thousand rare wine labels, ranging from prized vintage Super Tuscans to small-batch, natural biodynamic bottles from the Veneto hinterland.

Guided by world-class sommeliers, the wine pairings are crafted as dynamic narrative arcs that complement the complex, spice-laced notes of the tasting menu. Whether enjoying a glass of rare vintage Champagne during twilight or discovering an ancient orange wine aged in amphora, the bar ritual provides a rich, unhurried prelude to the evening's main feast.

As night falls over the lagoon, the experience at Oro reaches its zenith. During warmer months, dining extends onto the intimate outdoor waterside terrace, where guests sit directly at the water’s edge beneath the soft Venetian breeze. The dark water laps softly against the stone quay, reflecting the warm glow of the hotel's private gardens and distant city lights.

"Oro is not merely about dinner; it is an emotional homecoming to the spirit of Venice," reflects Culinary Creative Director Massimo Bottura. "It is where poetry, passion, and perfection meet on the water." With its rare blend of aristocratic charm, hyper-modern design, and Michelin-starred culinary genius, Oro remains an irreplaceable destination for the world's most discerning palates—an address that redefines luxury dining in the floating city.
